Malawi to Re-Open a Refugee Camp Despite Protest

Malawi to re-open a refugee camp despite a reported ‘strong protest’ from the Mozambican government.

According to a report on the Zitamar News website, Malawi will re-open a refugee camp despite a reported ‘strong protest’ from the Mozambican government.

Mozambique government, which wishes to see the refugees returned to Mozambique, tried to stop the re-opening of the camp, which would allow non-governmental organisations to provide 11 000 Mozambicans with ‘minimum humanitarian conditions’.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Malawi, Kelvin Shimoh, is quoted as saying that Malawi initially gave the go-ahead to re-open the Luwani camp on 11 March 2016, but rescinded that decision on 16 March saying they needed to consult ‘with people on the ground’.
