In the five years since its launch, the National Youth Service has witnessed a significant increase in the number of young people participating. The article reflects on the growth of the government-led initiative which has grown from three to four government departments involvement in the implementation to include almost 15 departments at national, provincial and local levels. The National Youth Service
ensured that more than 100 000 young South Africans have directly benefited their communities and the country

Nelson Mandela once said that education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world. But when Christo van der Rheede and his team facilitated a leadership and management course for teachers, education as a weapon seemed impossible when it was found that teachers themselves aren’t equipped to enforce this notion. While these teachers have all the commitment and enthusiasm necessary, how is it possible that most of our schools are struggling to deliver quality education

Can the creative energies of South Africa’s young people be turned into one of the country’s greatest assets, and a source of economic growth and prosperity? South Africa faces an enormous unemployment challenge. As a means to combat this problem, SBP believes that the NYDA has the potential to play a critical role in building the culture, skills and supporting the entrepreneurial growth of youth

During the many years I served as the principal of a primary and secondary school, teachers would bring boys and girls who were clearly heavily under the influence of Tik to my office. I could sense that my advice and support did not help much. It was traumatic to witness the physical deterioration and loss of personal pride in children who used to be bright and upright youngsters. Even those who made it, still suffer psychological and spiritual scars.

It is hard enough for girls and women to deal with harassment and abuse in our every day physical spaces – of work, school, home - but what about when it happens in virtual spaces? How do we control what happens in cyberspace? Girls’Net recognises these challenges and has launched the "Keep your chats exactly that!" campaign to address violence against girls in online spaces.

We can listen to parties that tell us they will look after the police, give them resources, have more of them etc to help reduce crime, but if we do not look at key issues around violence and crime from the perspective of children and integrate children into every major strategy to address this issue, we are simply wasting our time.

The first time I took part in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign was in 2001. Seven years later, while I still participate, I have started worrying that the campaign, once critical for gender and human rights activists around the world, is not making the kind of impact necessary to end levels of gender violence. I want to move from talking, marching, meeting and reflecting to action.

The Film and Publication Board launched the Pro-Child website aimed at eliminating child pornography in South Africa. There are more than 100 000 child pornography sites on the Internet.

The Sexual Offences Amendment Act  has positive and negative implications for the care and protection of children; both those who are victims and “perpetrators” of sexual offences.

26-30 May 2008 was Child Protection Week, a week in which we are reminded that protecting children is “everyone’s business”.
