Seminar: Race, Class and Affirmative Action

In recognition of International Human Rights Day, the Democracy Development Programme (DDP) and South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), are hosting a seminar entitled ‘Race, Class and Affirmative Action” on 9 December 2009 in Durban.

Over recent years, the implementation of Affirmative Action has become quite a contentious issue within various sectors across our society. Whilst many, on the one hand, question its morality, appropriateness and relevance, others consider it intrinsic to remedying the injustices of the past so as to create an equitable environment.

With questions around service delivery, economic and social transformation on the increase, affirmative action is again hugely in the spotlight. The fascination with race is to be expected given our history. Notably both sides of the debate and racial divide have found the present affirmative action initiatives inadequate. Some argue that transformation is too slow while others find the instruments aimed at redressing apartheid imbalances are insufficient and inadequate in advancing non-racialism within our country.
