Orphans & Vulnerable Children in Africa Conference 2010

Wednesday, June 30, 2010 - 16:25
Turning a Blind Eye is a response mechanism we all do consciously or unconsciously to matters that impact us that are hard to deal with” says Ashraf Grimwood, CEO at Kheth’Impilo the Chair of the conference. The Co-chair of the conference is Dr Siobhan Crowley from UNICEF.

The OVC Africa Conference is taking the step to becoming a platform that focuses global attention on Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Africa. Workers in the field of care, education and support, academics and professionals working with orphans and vulnerable children, human rights lawyers and community workers, regulators and politicians, members of civil society and leaders of industry are facing this issue head on by submitting abstracts based on the following tracks:
  • Track 1: Prevention, Treatment and Care
  • Track 2: Psychosocial Support
  • Track 3: Disaster and Risk Mitigation
The frequency of natural disasters appear to be increasing, killing hundreds of thousands of people, leaving scores of orphans and children whose carers are too ill to care for them. How is civil society, NGOs and Government responding?

What are the lessons that need to be shared?
  • Facebook, Twitter and the internet has proven a wonderful and an efficient way to connect with friends and families. Is this a double edged sword for our youth? Are OVC more vulnerable to exploitation through these mediums?
  • Abstract submission and early registration closes 30 July 2010. Don’t turn a blind eye, register now! For more information, visit the website at http://www.ovc-conference.co.za/.
