Not Me, Not Mine: Women, Girls and HIV

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) brings together the resources of the UNAIDS Secretariat and 10 UN system organisations for coordinated and accountable efforts to unite the world against AIDS. UNAIDS Secretariat is structured into two branches: Programme and Management and External Relations. It has Regional Support Teams working in seven regions.

Constitution Hill Precinct in Braamfontein Johannesburg has a very complex history going back to 1892 when the Old Fort was built under the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek. Functioning as a prison, except for the brief period of the South African War (1899-1902) when it was a military defence post, new buildings were added to the site in the late 1900s and early 20th Century: the so-called Natives’ section and isolation cells known as Sections Four and Five where black male prisoners were held, a Women’s Prison (1907), and an Awaiting Trial building (1920s).

UNAIDS, in partnership with Constitution Hill, is launching a photo exhibition under the theme ‘Not Me, Not Mine: Women, Girls and HIV’ from 22 November to 10 December 2012 in Johannesburg.

The event is aimed at commemorating 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence and also supporting the fight against gender-based violence, on 22 November to 10 December 2012 in Johannesburg.

Accompanied by first-hand narratives, the photographs represent a visual focus on women and girls, exploring ways in which they can investigate their lives as mothers, wives, professionals, students and sexual beings in the context of HIV.

Time: 18h00 for 18h30 to 20h30
