Masters Degree in African Studies
Mail&Guardian, 21 October 2008
The University of Fort Hare’s Institute of Social and Economic Research, a dedicated interdisciplinary research and post-graduate training centre, is now offering a two-year Masters Degree in African Studies.
The programme has been designed in partnership with the African Studies Centre at the University of Oxford. The programme is geared to stimulate new and dynamic research and scholarship about Africa, combining academic and applied perspectives and approaches to the continent.
The programme has two specifications:
- Southern African Cultural Studies
- African Gender Studies
The programme will consist of three examinable modules and a mini-thesis. The two-core modules centre on the theoretical and methodological issues in the student’s chosen area of specialisation. The third module can be selected (with the approval of the supervisor) from a range of relevant Master’s level options offered by the University. The mini-thesis, consulting percent of the mark, will be conducted in the second year of study. Graduates will be awarded a Master’s degree in Social Science specialising in either Southern African Cultural Studies or Gender Studies from the University of Fort Hare.
Successful applicants will be able to apply for bursaries and scholarships from FHISER.
