Master’s Studies
The University of the Western Cape’s Faculty of Education UWC invites applications to be admitted to the Master’s Studies in Education by full thesis in an area of specialisation in education.
The areas include:
- Language Education
- Curriculum Studies
- Educational Psychology and Educational Support Services
- Education Policy
- Educational Leadership and Management
- Higher Education Studies
- Science Education
- Sociology of Education
The MEd by full thesis is essentially an immersion into research and scholarship in the areas mentioned above. Seminar programmes will be organised to support students with research proposal development, literature survey, research methodology, data analysis and report writing. Students are expected to attend support classes on a regular basis.
In addition, the structured Master’s in Education comprising coursework and a mini-thesis will be offered in Mathematics Education, and the structured Master’s in Education comprising coursework (offered online) and a research paper will be offered in Adult Learning and Global Change.
For admission you should have a BEd (Honours), another relevant Honours or equivalent four-year degree with relevant experience in a cognate field. The MEd can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.
Doctoral Studies
Applications are also invited from prospective candidates who are interested in pursuing PhD studies in any of the above-mentioned areas of specialisation. For admission you should have a MEd or equivalent Master’s degree with relevant experience in a cognate field. The PhD can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.
Selection for the MEd and PhD programmes will be based on the assessment of formal applications which must include an online application form, a CV and a five page outline of what it is you wish to research.

- 1st Closing Date: 28 August 2009 - Cost R50.00
- 2nd Closing Date: 29 September 2009 - Cost R100.00
- Late Applications: 02 November 2009 - Cost R150
Preference will be given to early applications.
