The Land Reform in Southern Africa
Monday, May 18, 2009 - 13:55
BMTN Business Solutions and Training, with endorsement from the Association for Rural Advancement and the University of Pretoria, is hosting the Land Reform in Southern Africa Conference from 24-26 June 2009 in Pretoria.
After the attainment of political independence, Southern African governments were faced with the challenges of providing sustainable policies on land reform in order to address socio-economic injustices on the historically disadvantaged individuals and communities. All the socio-economic activities like farming, mining, healthcare, transport, education and sports revolve around land. In Southern Africa in particular, land remains a sensitive and explosive issue.
Land reform programmes, if not carried out efficiently and effectively, can have serious economic, political and social implications for the affected communities, or so history has such evidence. This conference will look into issues of restitution, redistribution and land tenure reform into in relation to globalisation, transformation and neo-colonialism. It will explore challenges associated with land redistribution for agricultural production, settlement and non-agricultural enterprises in Southern African countries.
Some of the major reasons why it is imperative to attend the conference:

- To gain an insight into the current challenges surrounding land redistribution, restitution and tenure in Southern Africa
- To discuss strategies and approaches that the stakeholders can follow and implement so as to avoid serious pitfalls in land reform that other countries have faced
- To understand and evaluate the effectiveness of policies on Land Reform in some Southern African countries
