Khulisa: Stakeholder Dialogue
Khulisa invites you to a stakeholder dialogue. This will centre around unique research that evaluates how children see, think and feel about crime, and their solutions to the problems they experience.
Khulisa is a national, multi-award winning non-profit organization established in 1997. The organisation addressess issues of crime prevention, criminal justice and prisoner rehabilitation. Khulisa's programmes focus on innovative thinking, education, leadership and skills training, and particularly, personal development that encourages people to assume responsibility for their actions and discourages anti-social behaviour.
The “Khulisa Kids” Survey Children's rights have not always been adequately protected in the past, in our country or globally. In recent years various international instruments have been implemented to address this issue, most importantly the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) of 1989, signed by and thus binding in upon all but two countries worldwide. South Africa ratified the Convention on 16 June 1995. Both the CRC and the South African Constitution call for freedom of expression and making the child's best interest paramount in all matters pertaining to him or her. Adults therefore have a responsibility to listen to children and to hear what they have to say about matters that affect them.
As a part of its 10th year celebrations, Khulisa has taken these principles to heart by conducting a survey. The survey, carried out in partnership with Professor H. Conradie (Department of Criminology, UNISA) is exploratory in nature and involved 529 children throughout Gauteng. The children were asked to suggest possible solutions addressing crime and improvements to the criminal justice system, from their perspective. At this occasion, the research findings will be presented together with the solutions to our crime problem as seen through the eyes of the participating children.
