IAJ: National Certificate in Radio Station Management

The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism’s (IAJ) Broadcast Training Department invites applications from fulltime staff at Gauteng-based community radio stations for its National Certificate in Radio Station Management (NQF Level 5). 

The National Certificate in Radio Station Management (NQF Level 5) is a generic programme across public, community and commercial radio broadcasting fields. This programme aims to increase competency across a range skills as well as standardise the qualification received. The purpose of this qualification is for learners to be able to manage the sourcing, selection and maintenance of a radio station’s output. Competencies acquired will include, human resources, marketing, sales, programming, amongst others.

  • Financial management skills
  • People development skills
  • Communication skills
  • Marketing skills
  • Advertising skills
  • Programming and Formatting skills
  • Electives (Schedule music for radio station, select music for radio station and manage music for radio station)

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric certificate
  • Three years’ experience working for a radio station at management level
  • Basic computer literacy (word processing)
  • Understanding of basic project management
  • Understanding community broadcasting regulations
  • Women and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply

Course Duration

The Learnership Programme has been designed to be completed over 12 to 14 months. It requires 1570 hours of work- study and workplace assignments- for completion.

This is broken up into 220 hours for the fundamental unit standards, 1200 hours for the core unit standards and 150 hours for an elective.

The certificate is registered at NQF 5 and carries 157 credits.

Course Fees

  • Registration fee (applicable to all applicants): R1 200
  • The course is supported in tuition fees and learning materials for 50 community radio candidates by MAPPP-SETA
  • Each learner will sign a 12 months learning contract that will ensure she/he is committed to this programme for the entire learning process.

Participants who complete the programme successfully will be awarded the National Certificate in Radio Station Management (NQF Level 5)

Note: candidates may enroll for this learnership only when they are fulltime employees/volunteers in community radio stations in Gauteng
