The Great Political Debate: Is the Personal Political?
The Great Political Debate: Is the Personal Political?
As we brace ourselves for the forth national democratic elections, a key and central question that many South Africans have been asking themselves is: What kind of leadership does this country need in consolidating and strengthening democracy?
Pursuant to the latter part of the question is whether it is desirable to make a distinction between and separate the public lives of those seeking public office from their private life? In other words, can one’s private life be used to gauge or judge their potential to contribute positively to society? If so, what value system or frame of reference will guide such an endeavour and, even more important, who is qualified to make such a judgement? Furthermore, how do we balance the public’s right to know with the individual leader’s right to privacy and dignity?
Gender Links, South African Human Rights Commission, Constitution Hill and the Mail & Guardian cordially invite you to the great debate, a forum for participatory discussion on accountable and responsive leadership in South Africa. Join us and make your voice heard on what makes a good leader.
