Good Governance Programme: Election Observation

The Good Governance Programme at the University of Pretoria is conducting a course on ‘Election Observation’ from 6-10 September 2010. The Election Observation course holistically evaluates the institution of election observation, its value and its application with specific reference to African democracies.
The following issues are dealt with:
Closing date for applications:
Applications should be submitted at least one month prior to the starting date of the course. Admission will be on a competitive basis and the admission criteria will include working experience, academic qualifications, and the levels of commitment and professionalism displayed through past experience. In respect of South African candidates special consideration will be given to the advancement of potential applicants from previously disadvantaged groups.

- Observation missions
- Short and long term observers
- The phases of an election
- Analysis of electoral acts, constitutions and relevant legislation
- Cultural sensitivity on the continent
- Re-evaluation of the concept of free and fair elections
