Fifteen Years of Freedom and Democracy in South Africa

Monday, May 18, 2009 - 13:36
The South African Institute of Race Relations is thus convening a major two-day conference on 15 Years of Freedom and Democracy. Here, some of the country’s most experienced analysts will review issues ranging from the rule of law, to crime and corruption, the strength of civil society, the balance between growth and redistribution, and the progress made in combating poverty and inequality.

After 15 years of freedom and democracy under an the African National Congress (ANC) government, what gains have been achieved and how can they be consolidated? What weaknesses have emerged and how can they be overcome? As President Jacob Zuma and his Cabinet settle into their new jobs, it is vital to look back on key events since 1994 and assess how South Africa has fared in ten policy areas crucial to democracy, economic prosperity, and the liberation of the poor.
