The Faculty of Education Sciences at North West University is hosting an international conference on Education and the Constitution at 20 under the theme ‘Perspectives on Rights, Values and Accountability’ from 7-9 April 2013 in Potchefstroom.
The conference is hosted in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the South African Constitution and the 60th anniversary of the watershed United States case of Brown vs Board of Education an international conference on the Constitution and Education.
This interactive, comparative conference will provide insight on the role of Constitutions and their influence on educational systems. The conference will provide opportunities for participants to reflect on the past attainments and challenges in their respective educational systems while considering prospective developments and trends with regard to the following sub-themes:
- Equal educational opportunities;
- Values orientations and values-based education;
- Student rights and discipline and safe school environments;
- Privatisation of educational institutions; and
- Accountability in education.
The conference is aimed at academics, school principals, administrators, members of school governing bodies, educators, trade union members, legal practitioners, officials from education departments, human rights organisations, members from the NGO-sector and students.
