Cyber dialogue: Funding for Women in the Media

Cyber dialogue: Funding for Women in the Media

Gender Links in conjunction with Gender and Media Southern Africa, Gender and Media Diversity Centre and the United Nations Development Fund for Women, is hosting a Cyber Dialogue: Funding for Women in the Media on 14 November 2008.

You are invited to express your views, to inspire others with your insights, to share your successes, and voice your frustrations! Women’s media is an integral and evocative part of the struggle for women’s human rights and yet it is under-funded and under-utilised. Share your views on why this is so and how we can change the situation for the better.

Join the Gender and Media Diversity Centre and GEMSA in a cyber dialogue that extends in real time the wiki collaboration began earlier in November to discuss financing for gender equality. The dialogue coincides with the AWID conference in Cape Town that brings together women’s rights activists from across the globe. Several gender, media and IT activists are expected to join in the chat from across the globe, with GEMSA chapters in all the Southern African countries ensuring a robust regional participation.

  • In what ways is women’s media particularly relevant in the fight for gender equality?
  • In what ways is a human rights perspective relevant to women’s media work?
  • Is lack of funding keeping women out of media work?
  • What funding modalities are appropriate to women in the media?

The outputs from the chat will be added to the collaborative paper and used to advocate for funding to ensure that own, and participate effectively in, the media.
