Zakheni Arts Therapy Foundation
The Zakheni Arts Therapy Foundation is a NGO providing psychological and emotional support to children, adolescents and adults through the medium of the creative arts therapies. The organisation was founded in 2001 by Art Therapist Linda Souchon and Dramatherapist Kirsten Meyer and its vision is to provide psychological, emotional and social support to improve the wellbeing of children, adolescents and adults through the Creative Arts Therapies.
The Zakheni Arts Therapy Foundation is hosting a three-day workshop entitled ‘Beyond Words’ from 26-28 October 2012 in Cape Town.
The workshop is aimed at equipping social workers, clinical psychologists, registered counsellors and occupational therapists to use arts based methods and techniques in their work with children, adolescents, adults and older people. The skills and experiences gained by participants can be adapted to and incorporated in many work spheres, both individual and group. These methods are drawn from internationally developed creative arts therapies disciplines.
The skills and experiences gained by participants can be adapted to and incorporated in many work spheres, both individual and group.
Participants will gain knowledge on how working with image, metaphor and play can facilitate psychological processes. This method of working is particularly suited to clients who:
- Struggle to articulate their difficulties through words;
- Are traumatised;
- Are prone to destructive acting out;
- Have difficulties in containing their intense emotions;
- Have social and behavioural difficulties;
- Present with somatic difficulties;
- Have reached an impasse within the therapeutic process;
- Have a psychiatric diagnosis which impedes their communication;
- Wish to explore the wholeness of their personality including their creativity.
The three days will combine both an experiential and a theoretical component. Participants will engage with their own creativity and explore a range of arts based approaches such as, six-part story-making process, traditional tales and image making through art and embodied sculpture.
Examples and case material will be given throughout and participants will also be assisted in thinking about how to apply these methodologies with their own case material with both individuals and groups.
