Between state and society - Evolution of non-state actors in the MENA region Conference

The Afro-Middle East Centre (AMEC)

AMEC's 2018 international conference will focus on armed and unarmed non-state actors in MENA, and bring together roleplayers and academics from and outside the region to discuss this theme.

The role and future of non-state actors - both armed and civil society - in the Middle East and North Africa is a theme of great interest, especially after the 2011 uprisings, when the focus on civil society groups intensified, and they were simultaneously romanticised and demonised, and attempts sometimes made to co-opt them. Governments in the region sometimes attempted co-option, often repression. In some contexts, civil society groups exist alongside armed non-state actors such as Hamas and Hizbullah. In many cases, such groups are led by political parties which play roles in governance, and have civil society wings. AMEC's 2018 international conference will focus on armed and unarmed non-state actors in MENA, and bring together roleplayers and academics from and outside the region to discuss this theme.
