ABOUT THE MODERATOR AND SPEAKERS
Professor Leila Patel, Director at the CSDA and South African Chair in Welfare and Social Development
Leila Patel is Professor of Social Development Studies at the Centre for Social Development in Africa, University of Johannesburg. She played a leading role in the development of welfare policy post-apartheid. Her research interests are in social welfare and social development with reference to social protection, gender and care, and children and youth.
Professor Linda Richter, Professor and Director of DST- NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development
Linda Richter (PhD) is a Distinguished Professor and the Director of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development at the University of the Witwatersrand. She has conducted basic and policy research in the fields of child and family development, publishing more than 450 papers and chapters in these fields. Linda is the Principal Investigator of several large-scale, long-term collaborative projects, including Birth to Twenty Plus, a birth cohort study of 3 273 children with follow up for 28 years.
Professor Shanaaz Matthews, Director of the University of Cape Town’s Children’s Institute
Prof Shanaaz Matthews’ research focuses on violence against women and children, as well as the pathways that men follow when they develop into perpetrators of violence in the home. She is lead investigator for the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence on Human Development at the University of the Witwatersrand where she is developing a violence research agenda. Shanaaz is also an International Advisory Board member for Multi Country Study on the Drivers of Violence for UNICEF Innocenti Research Office Florence.
