Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ)
The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) is an established media journalism and communications training institution based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The IAJ was set up by veteran South African editors and journalists to provide mid-career training to media professionals that is leading edge and relevant to the rapidly-changing media landscape. The IAJ is South Africa’s premier provider of journalism and communications short courses, longer-term mentorships, and residency programmes, with an African footprint and global reach through our international partners.
The IAJ is conducting a course on Design and Build Your Own App from 22-24 August 2016 in Johannesburg.
Why build your own apps? Isn't it highly technical?
The answer to both questions is that if you are in the media and communications game you need to add apps to your existing suite of tools- and there are plenty of ways to do so without being a technical geek. There are millions of apps out there for smartphones and tablets, but there is always space for yours. This short course teaches, first, how to focus on what your users need to know about you and how they would like to interact with you most directly and easily straight from their mobiles. Secondly, we develop your app's storyboard - the flow of content and navigation that makes an app fast, functional and fun. Finally, we create the tool itself, choosing from a range of online and mobile app builders that do not demand programming skills.
You can do it, and it will boost your reputation, your reach and your confidence as a communicator. The differences between Android and Apple native platforms are covered, along with web-based solutions that serve both. The workshop uses MIT’s App Inventor and Google App Engine, both for Android, but this does not preclude alternative Apple platforms.
Time: 8h45 – 16h00
