Constitution Hill is a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency. It is a national heritage site and home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa. This iconic venue, situated in the Johannesburg CBD, also includes the notorious Old Fort Prison Complex and Number 4 where South Africa’s leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours to the Women’s Gaol museum, Number Four museum, and Old Fort museum, Constitution Hill has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes.
The Constitution Hill is hosting the annual ‘We, The People Walk 2016’ on Sunday, 24 April 2016, in Johannesburg.
The ‘We, The People Walk’ title was taken from the South African constitution preamble. This year’s walk commemorates 20 years of the Constitution and is a symbolic activity that seeks to affirm constitutionalism while recognising the role of those who participated in the struggle for the attainment of South Africa’s Constitutional Democracy.
All contributions towards the walk will be used to advance constitutional education for learners and citizens of South Africa.
While ‘We, The People Walk’ takes place, children under the age of 12 will have an opportunity to participate in their own walk, designed to inculcate the Bill of Rights and Responsibilities through activities such as interacting with mascots; musical activities; chalking the legacy and other child friendly activities.
After the walk there will be various activities for both young and old alike! On stage will be performances by musicians, poets and dancers, and there will also be activities for children such as face-painting, a jumping castle, as well as educational programmes to teach them about their rights and responsibilities.
This will be a fun-filled day for the entire family!
