Public Protector Campaign: Bua Mzansi

Corruption Watch

The Office of the Public Protector, as a key Chapter Nine institution, performs a critical function in protecting and supporting democracy in South Africa. The appointment of a new Public Protector this year, to replace Thuli Madonsela, who ends her term of office on 19 October 2016, presents an opportunity to mobilise the public around this important appointment.

Corruption Watch invites the media to attend a media breakfast to launch its new public awareness campaign that will highlight the role played by the Public Protector and engage the public to actively participate in the nomination process, as is their democratic right.

The objectives of the campaign, Bua Mzansi, are three-fold: to increase public awareness of the role of the Office of the Public Protector; to encourage the public to take an active part in nominating and voting for suitable candidates for the position; and to ensure transparency through the vetting of candidates and monitoring of the process.

Corruption Watch will be launching the campaign at Constitution Hill on Monday, 8 February 2016. On the following day, in a fitting demonstration of support for the Office of the Public Protector and the binding nature of its constitutional powers, Corruption Watch will appear in the Constitutional Court as amicus curiae in the Economic Freedom Fighters / Democratic Alliance challenge being heard on Tuesday, 9 February 2016.

Details of the media launch of Bua Mzansi campaign are as follows:
