Zim Police Crack Down on NGOs

Zimbabwean police have raided the National Youth Development Trust (NYDT) offices in Bulawayo, searching for alleged voter registration certificates.

The raid, which was also aimed at other documents containing information that may adversely affect the interests of the state, coincided with the summoning of Bulawayo-based Habakkuk Trust chief executive officer, Dumisani Nkomo, to Plumtree for questioning by police over a meeting the organisation held in the area recently.

More Register to Vote in Municipal Elections

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says more than 600 000 people visited voting stations on the first day of the final voter registration weekend.
 
IEC deputy chief electoral officer, Mosotho Moepya, says people visited the stations to either register as new voters, re-register if they had changed addresses or to inspect their details on the voters' roll.
 

Over 20 Million Eligible to Vote – IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has reported that the number of South Africa citizens who will be able to participate in the upcoming local government elections has reached 23.1 million.

IEC chairperson, Brigalia Bam, has expressed happiness with the turnout of people during the registration weekend on 5 and 6 February, but can only hope for more increase on the upcoming registration weekend in March.

The IEC further says that KwaZulu-Natal had the majority of new registrations, with 134 807 out of a national total of 534 016 of new registrations.

400 000 Register to Vote, Says IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says at least 400 000 people have registered to vote on the first voter registration weekend held ahead of the 2011 local government elections.

IEC chairperson, Brigalia Bam, says that that the total figures from the voter registration weekend will be available this week, adding that she expects the figures to increase.
