A new clinical trial is underway in South Africa on an experimental vaccine that could safely prevent HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
According to a statement from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the HVTN 702 is the largest and most advanced HIV vaccine clinical trial to be undertaken in South Africa, where some seven million people are living with the virus.

The new Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) report says that by taking the Fast-Track approach, nearly 28 million new HIV infections and 21 million AIDS-related deaths would be averted by 2030.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that, the death toll from the Ebola epidemic has risen above 2 000, however hopes that a vaccine could be available in November 2014.
Following a two-day crisis meeting in Geneva, WHO confirmed that the deadly virus has claimed 2 097 lives out of 3 944 people infected in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone since emerging in December 2013.

The United Nations (UN) says that the global AIDS-related deaths and new HIV infections have fallen by over a third in a decade, the UN says as it voiced hope of wiping out the killer disease.
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) executive director, Michel Sidibe, says global effort to beat the pandemic has made huge strides, though the battle is far from over with 35 million people still living with HIV worldwide.

A new initiative to find an HIV vaccine, Uhambo, has been announced at the South African AIDS Conference in Durban.
This 10-year initiative builds on unexpected results from a study in Thailand which found some immune responses from the body to suppress the HI virus.
University of the Witwatersrand AIDS researcher, Dr Glenda Gray, says the first step will be to see if South African volunteers show the same response as those in Thailand.

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network says that with the next attempts expected to be years away, top researchers now say there is a ‘void’ or a ‘gap’ in current clinical-trial efforts to test whether a vaccine is safe and effective.
The organisation says an autopsy on the past four big bids to make an HIV vaccine has informed the field as to what does not work, the latest casualty being a trial of HVTN 505 that was halted early because it did not prevent HIV.
