Disagreements Overshadow Rio+20

Discord overshadowed debate about the world's environment at the Rio+20 United Nations summit, while celebrities clamoured for a sanctuary to protect the riches of the Arctic.

On its penultimate day, UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, defended the first large-scale conference on sustainable development in a decade as ‘the beginning of a journey’.

Bolivian President, Evo Morales, described the green economy as "a new colonialism" that rich nations sought to impose on developing countries.

UN Criticises DRC Forces Over Rights

A report by the United Nations (UN) joint Human Rights Office in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has found that the country's security forces committed serious human rights violations.

The report found that the violations include killings and arbitrary detentions ahead of elections last year.

The investigation found that at least 33 people were killed in the capital Kinshasa during November and December last year, and at least 83 wounded, mainly by gunshots whereas 16 others remain unaccounted for.

Forum Focuses on Reducing E-Waste

Representatives from 18 African states, the United Nations, NGOs, the private sector and academia, have agreed on a set of priority actions for reducing the environmental and health impacts of growing levels of e-waste in Africa.

The actions were agreed at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the final day of the Pan-African Forum on E-Waste and included promoting the sector's potential for green jobs and economic development, in Nairobi, Kenya.

UN Launches ‘Polio Eradication Drive’

Secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, has launched a national polio vaccination campaign in Angola, where the crippling disease has returned despite being eradicated in 2001.

Ban, who praised the Government for its leadership on the issue, pointed out that, "Polio eradication must be treated as a public health emergency."

Ban further stressed the need to also keep track of the situation, improve the water supply, and create a clean environment and strong surveillance system.

UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter, points out that, “We must not wait until people are starving in order to act. The world must respond immediately to avert a full-scale food and nutrition crisis."

Speaking during his visit to Ghana, De Schutter warned that the crisis will be triggered by drought, poor harvests and rising food prices.

Call for Better AU-UN Cooperation

President Jacob Zuma says Africa must never again be a playground for furthering the interests of other regions.

Speaking at the council in New York, Zuma presented an argument for stronger relations between the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

His comments came as South Africa assumed the presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, which rotates alphabetically, and immediately pushed for recognition of the African agenda, which is often out of step with the rest of the world.
