Teens Admit to Having Unsafe Sex

The Gauteng Department of Social Development says that most teenagers in the province admit to preferring unsafe sex.

Social development MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, who briefed the media on the department study, ‘Factors Associated with Teenage Pregnancy in Gauteng Province’, pointed out that teen pregnancies are a problem that could not be ignored.

Mayathula-Khoza, who is of the view that teenage pregnancy contributes the level of unemployment, also added that, “…girls who fall pregnant have a right to continue with school.”

ILO Report Focuses on Unemployment

According to a new report released by the United Nations’ International Labour Organisation, an estimated 73 million young people will be out of work this year.

The report, which calls for creative and wide-ranging policy solutions to address the problem, states that the weakening of the global recovery has further aggravated the youth jobs crisis and that queues for available jobs have become longer and longer for young jobseekers.

Latest Unemployment Figures Shock COSATU

The Statistics South Africa Quarterly Labour Force Survey has revealed that the number of unemployed persons increased by 100 000 people to 4.6 million between the fourth quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013. This took the country's official unemployment rate to 25.2 percent from 24.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) says that South Africa could do better with a youth wage subsidy than without.

Stats SA statistician general, Pali Lehohla, points out that there is a problem of skills, experience and of getting into the system in the country.

Call to Create Workplace-Based Learning Opportunities

The Da Vinci Institute has called on South African universities to work towards increasing work-based learning opportunities for their students.

Speaking at his inauguration as the first chancellor of the Da Vinci Institute, in Johannesburg, Edward Kieswetter, said that South Africa has a high graduate unemployment rate, with many of its educated youth unable to make that essential first step into the workplace to gain working experience.

Fisantekraal Centre for Development (FCD) is a Christian NGO that strives to develop people and significantly decrease unemployment levels in the greater Durbanville area, Cape Town. The organisation offers short term training courses and assits graduates in finding employment.

FCD started in 2009 and has become well established. In order to succeed in its next phase of development, which includes building a centre in nearby Fisantekraal.

FCD seeks to appoint a new full-time Director, based in Cape Town.
