An HIV Vaccine: Imagining the Future of HIV Prevention

This month (November) in Cape Town, a group of global scientists working to find a vaccine to prevent HIV are meeting. Human rights activist, Tian Johnson, was there and writes about what the discovery of HIV vaccine would mean to him.
 
My sister Miranda, died of AIDS in 2007 at the age of 35, a year older than I am now. She was a mother to three boys who had yet to reach their teens when she took her last breath. That last breath came in a hospital that, even after a prolonged stay, was unable to provide her with the most basic care.
 

Claims of AIDS Cure Rejected

Once again, this month Zimbabwean government had to come forth to refute some charlatan’s claim that he has found a cure for AIDS, and he is willing to share this medical miracle with one and all – provided of course that they pay him money.

Kanya Mabuza, national executive director for the National Emergency Response Council on HIV and AIDS (NERCHA) felt compelled to counter news reports of a traditional healer’s purported cure before the matter got out of hand.

Judgement Reserved in Botswana ARV Case

The Botswana government says it cannot afford to provide foreign inmates with antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) due to budget constraints.
 
The Botswana Court of Appeals has reserved judgment on a case in which the Botswana government appealed a high court ruling to provide foreign prisoners with anti-retrovirals (ARV’s).
 
The case includes a demand by an HIV positive Zimbabwean prisoner to be released, due to failure by the government to provide him with ARV’s.
 

SA Progress in the Fight Against AIDS – CAPRISA

South Africa has over the past five years made significant strides in fighting the battle against the HIV/Aids epidemic, according to the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA).

CAPRISA director, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, speaking at the 7th South Aids Conference in Durban, stated that the rate of mother to child transmission has dropped to less than one percent compared to the rate of one in three well over ten years ago.

Early ART Treatment Effective Against AIDS

Early antiretroviral treatment after diagnosis of HIV infection significantly reduces the likelihood of getting AIDS or other serious illnesses, according to results from a large international clinical trial published.
 
The study was presented a year earlier than planned after preliminary data showed that people who received treatment from diagnosis were 53 percent less likely to die or develop a serious illness such as AIDS compared to a control group where treatment began later when the immune system is weakened.
 

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation: Study Coordinator

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation (DTHF) is a registered nonprofit organisation focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa. 

The DTHF seeks to appoint a Study Coordinator, based in Masiphumelele, Fishhoek in Western Cape.

This is a full-time one-year fixed-term contract position.
