Small-Scale Farmers Risk Losing Farms

Scores of small scale farmers in Jozini, northern KwaZulu-Natal, are at risk of losing their farms.

According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s Ayanda Mhlongo, more than 20 farmers have already lost their farms due to alleged corruption and mismanagement by Mjindi - a government appointed management entity.

Mhlongo says the farmers claim to have lease agreements on the land, adding that other farmers also allege government promised them farming implements, withheld by Mjindi, resulting in dying crops.

NGO Trains Young Farmers in Delmas

Farming is labour intensive and needs individuals with a passion for the industry, young farmers who are attending courses in Delmas said.

Buhle Academy, a non-governmental organisation started in year 2000, has already produced more than 3000 farmers.

One of the students, 20-year-old Thami Mthethwa from Soweto is attending a vegetable production course. Mthethwa attended a farmers’ expo last year in Nasrec and developed an interest in farming.

Supporting Self-Employed Farmers

According to latest statistics 19.4 percent of South African households have inadequate or severely inadequate access to food. With the current economic situation, high unemployment and increasing food prices, providing for the basic needs of a family is becoming more and more difficult for many people around the world, including millions of South Africans. A growing global population makes the situation even more complicated. By 2050, some experts think there might not be enough food for everyone.

Subsistence Farming A Way to Overcome Poverty

Poverty is on the increase since the inception of democracy in South Africa. Close to 15 million South Africans are now receiving social grants. The introduction of government-sponsored job creation projects, especially in rural areas, could enable people to grow their local economies while earning an income. This could ease pressure on government as most people will no longer rely on social grants for survival. This could be the first practical step towards eradicating poverty.
