Malawi Criticised for Arresting Street Kids

The Malawi Government has hit back at critics of its decision to arrest parents of street kids in the country.

The exercise was expected to start next month but did not go well with some civil society organisations who suggested that government should stop the process.

The organisations are lobbying that government should provide a tangible solution to the matter rather than arresting the beggars since poverty forces them to stay in the streets.

Ugandan Cops Abuse Street Kids - HRW

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) says the Ugandan street children face constant abuse from police and government officials, who beat and extort bribes from them.

The organisation states that police as well as Kampala city officials detain street children after targeted roundups.

In its report entitled ‘Where Do You Want Us To Go?’ the organisation further states that police beat them with batons, whips and wires as punishment for vagrancy or to extort bribes as a condition for letting them go.
