Media Monitoring Africa Protests SABC Appointment Procedures

We note with great concern the apparent procedural irregularities in the appointment of the new head of news for the SABC. It is deeply disappointing that the SABC should have followed such a lengthy interview and appointment process for the new head of news only for it to be sabotaged in the selection and announcement of the successful candidate.

MMA supports calls by SOS and others for an urgent investigation by the SABC Board into the processes that were, or were not followed in announcing the appointment of Phil Molefe as the new head of News.

AG Report, SABC to Take Legal Action

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board is considering taking criminal action against employees and former staff after a shocking report on the broadcaster by the Auditor General (AG).

The SABC's interim chairperson, Irene Charnley, says that the board agreed to immediately act on all the AG's findings on supply-chain management, human resources, and wasteful expenditure at the broadcaster.

SABC Cleared Over Blacklisting Controversy

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is off the hook following a complaint by the Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) to an Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) committee over its blacklisting controversy.

ICASA’s Complaints and Compliance Committee (CCC) ruled it had no jurisdiction over the public broadcaster's journalistic independence and internal functions.
