Botswana Ranked 1st on Rule of Law

An American non-government organisation ranked Botswana number one in Africa and 25th out of 99 countries surveyed around the world in terms of the rule of law.

According to the just released Rule of Law Index 2014 by the World Justice Project, Botswana, with an overall score of 67, continues to enjoy effective systems of checks and balances, including a fairly independent judiciary and a free press.

The report says corruption remains minimal in Botswana while all branches of government operate effectively.

SADC Lawyers Association: Programmes Officer

The Southern African Development Community Lawyers Association (SADC LA) is an independent voluntary association made up of Law Societies and Bar Associations of the SADC region. The SADC Lawyers Association strives to uphold human rights, the respect for the rule of law, promote and support for the independence of the judiciary and protection of fundamental liberties.

The SADC Lawyers Association seeks to appoint a Programmes Officer, based in Pretoria.

Moseneke: Leaders Can’t Escape Judgment Day

Former deputy chief justice, Dikgang Moseneke, wants leaders to be held accountable through the threat of removal at the ballot box, and he says ‘race is a refuge most people run to’.

Speaking after the launch of the International Federation for Human Rights’ 39th conference in Johannesburg, Moseneke, who added that he is positive about the country, says the strongest form of accountability is electoral accountability.

His comments come shortly after the ANC suffered its worst performance at the polls yet, losing major metropoles in the recent local government elections.
