Global Slavery Index Criticised

Joel Quirk and André Broome say that the Global Slavery Index is profoundly flawed methodologically, yet it remains widely and often uncritically cited.

They criticise the ‘Global Slavery Index’, which they describe as ‘the most accurate and comprehensive measure of the extent and risk of modern slavery’.

However, Quirk and Broome are of the view that the Index contains what they call ‘highly suspect statistics’, adding that the inaugural 2013 index had been repeatedly criticised for using unreliable, incomplete and inappropriate data.

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation: Project Coordinator

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation (DTHF) is a registered nonprofit organisation focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa.

The DTHF seeks to appoint a Driver, based in Observatory, Johannesburg.

This full-time one-year fixed-term contract position.

Requirements:

Lack of Funding Cripples ARC

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC), which received a grant of R866-million in 2013/14, 16 percent more than the previous year, was established in 1990 to be the country’s primary agricultural scientific research institution, but has suffered from years of neglect and underfunding.

In its annual report, the ARC paints a picture of an organisation suffering from chronic underfunding and trying to do the best with the resources available.

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation seeks to appoint a Senior Financial and Project Administrator, based in Masipumelele office, Cape Town.

This is a full-time two year fixed term contract position.

Responsibilities:

Govt Conducts Survey to Combat TB

Zambia’s deputy minister of health, Chitalu Chilufya, states that the country is conducting a national tuberculosis (TB) prevalence survey to present evidence that will ensure effective TB programming in future.

Speaking at a research dissemination meeting organised by the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), Chilufya asserted that programme-based research will form a greater part of the national TB control programme.

Chilufya is of the view that the fight against TB called for collaborative efforts between government and partners.

FUNDISA: Administrative Assistant

FUNDISA in a nonprofit organisation established to be a unified platform to pursue excellence in nursing scholarship at Universities in South Africa. The aim of FUNDISA is to promote University nursing practice, research and education in collaboration with other stakeholders. In so doing, FUNDISA aims to strengthen University education for nurses in South Africa and to represent the collective concerns of University Schools of Nursing at national and international level, in order to further the provision of quality health care.

Economic Policy Research Institute: Researcher

The Economic Policy Research Institute (EPRI) is a not-for-profit, independent social policy research institute registered as a Section 21 corporation in South Africa. EPRI conducts research on issues related to social protection in Africa and Asia, organises and teaches at social protection capacity building courses around the globe, and provides economic and social policy training to members of the South African parliament. EPRI is committed to pro-poor, equitable and inclusive economic growth and to social protection for vulnerable people as developmental responses to poverty.

Wits University HIV Breakthrough

Two University of the Witwatersrand scientists have made major strides in the quest of finding a vaccine to prevent the HIV infection. The researchers, Maria Papathanasopoulos and Dr Penny Moore, will present a research lecture on their internationally recognised work at the University of the Witwatersrand on 26 November 2013.

Papathanasopoulos argues that, although condoms and male circumcision works to prevent HIV, about 1 000 South Africans are still infected every day.
