HIV/AIDS Manageable - NGO

The AIDS Foundation of South Africa says HIV/AIDS in the country has become a manageable chronic condition.

The organisation’s chief executive officer, Debbie Matthew, says this can be attributed to the positive leadership from the government, the ground-breaking work by scientists and pressure from advocacy groups.

Matthew explains: "What treatment does, it reduces the viral load in that patient to almost undetectable levels which means they are less likely to transmit HIV to other people that they will come into contact with sexually…”

Circumcision Plans Go Awry in Swaziland

It is an ambitious plan to circumcise the majority of men in Swaziland, an effort to reduce the risk of HIV transmission in a country with the world’s highest HIV prevalence.

Some Swazis believe that circumcision will not protect them against HIV, while others have a problem with the fact that one cannot have sex for some weeks or months after circumcision.

Billions of Dollars, Still No AIDS Vaccine

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network says that with the next attempts expected to be years away, top researchers now say there is a ‘void’ or a ‘gap’ in current clinical-trial efforts to test whether a vaccine is safe and effective.

The organisation says an autopsy on the past four big bids to make an HIV vaccine has informed the field as to what does not work, the latest casualty being a trial of HVTN 505 that was halted early because it did not prevent HIV.

Angola Receives a Donation to Fight Malaria

The Angolan Minister of Health, José Van-Dunem, says that the US$1.8 million donation made to the country’s National Malaria Fighting Programme aims to increase the capacity of the NGOs to implement the programme so as to control malaria.

Van-Dunem says the success of this programme will impact on three key elements of the Millennium Development Goal in regard to health, reduction of endemic diseases, malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS.

The DTHF seeks to appoint a Recruitment and Retention Officer, based in Masiphumelele, Fish Hoek near Cape Town.

The Retention Officer will remind participants of upcoming visits, follow up with participants who missed their visits & gain an understanding of why participants do not return for their scheduled visits.

This is a renewable one-year contract position.
