Progress Made On New Super-Thin Condom

Billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates, says that progress is being made on developing a ‘next-generation’ ultra-thin, skin-like condom that could offer better sexual pleasure, help population control and be financed by first-world investors.

Last year, the Microsoft co-founder and one of the world's richest men offered inventors US$100 000 in start-up grants to develop a ‘next-generation’ of super-sheath condoms through the charitable Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Research Highlights Progress in HIV Prevention

United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), among others, has released research studies which provide evidence that safe, high quality voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) services performed by trained healthcare professionals in low resource settings can be implemented and sustained at scale and have the potential to significantly prevent new HIV infections in adolescent and adult men.

WHO Warns of Return of Child Killer Polio

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that polio has re-emerged as a public health emergency - new cases have surfaced in and spread across the borders of Syria and Pakistan, among other countries.

WHO assistant director-general, Bruce Aylward, points out that, "The conditions for [declaring] a public health emergency of international concern have been met," following crisis talks on the virus long thought to be nearly extinct in Geneva.

The Other Side of the Female Condom

Female condoms are not just for the ladies as some gay men in KaMsogwaba Township outside Nelspruit have found, but nearby clinic nurses are still not sold on the idea.

“We get asked why we are using female condoms if we are men.”

While not originally designed for use in anal sex, female condoms can be used by men who have sex with men (MSM) during sex in lieu of traditional male condoms.

UN Bemoans Falling Use of Condoms in Africa

The Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) says that people in several African countries are using fewer condoms and have sex with more than one partner, threatening efforts to fight HIV.

In its annual report, UNAIDS notes that new infections in sub-Saharan Africa dropped 34 percent between 2001 and 2012.

However, the region last year still accounted for 70 percent of the estimated 2.3 million new infections with the virus.

If further states that there is evidence that the number of people who have more than one sexual partner was rising in many African countries.

ARV Pill Prevents HIV Study

A study has found that if people at high risk of contracting HIV take antiretrovirals as a preventative measure daily, they get almost total protection from the virus.

The results of the study, which have been published in the online journal, Plos, found that of the 750 HIV-negative Ugandans who had HIV-positive partners and took ARVs for over a year, not one contracted HIV.

In the control group of 404 Ugandans who had been given a placebo, 14 became infected with the virus.

UN Hails Drop in AIDS Deaths in Africa

The United Nations' AIDS agency is hailing what officials describe as significant progress in the fight against the epidemic in eastern and Southern Africa.

The report says AIDS-related deaths have declined dramatically and that the number of new infections has decreased - a direct result of more available treatment. But, they warned, challenges remain.
