Effective People Development in a NonProfit Organisation

By Frank Julie: Assisting people in their development is one of the primary tasks of a leader and manager in a NPO. In fact, it is the task. To build the capacity of staff and volunteers ensures the perpetuation or reproduction of the organization, the final test of leadership! It ensures that the vision and mission can be taken forward when the leader has to move on.

NonProfit Sector Legislation Overview

The Nonprofit Consortium (NPC) has prepared a helpful resource entitled Legislation Relevant to the nonprofit Sector that can be used by nonprofit organisations to navigate the legal system and by government to streamline law as well as policy governing the nonprofit sector.

The legal system of a country can significantly impact on the vibrancy of its nonprofit sector. The South African legal system has rapidly developed since 1994 with a number of laws being relevant to the nonprofit sector.

Part 3 - Getting the Partners You Want

An organisation strives to reach perfection in three areas - its income, its expenses, and its impact. These three areas cover the universe of a successful NGO and summarise the executive director concerns. The three are interlocking, since each one requires the other two. Partners can help in each area and get selected for doing so.

Why the Organisation has three needs:

  • Organisational Development;
  • NPOs;
  • Funding.

Financial Management:

CSI or CSR - Are You a Learning NPO?

So what’s the difference between CSI (Corporate Social Investment) and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)? Do you know and have you considered how these two concepts impact on your work as a non-profit organisation and your current way of doing things?

The terms corporate citizenship, sustainable development and partnerships are  bandied around and glibly used by the non-profit sector as a solution to fighting poverty and changing lives.

Words as Weapons:

NonProfit Regulation

State Of Regulation of the Non-Profit Sector in SA: Cumbersome Framework Creates Blockages for NGOs,Tessa Brewis, NPO Law Programme Manager of the Non-Profit Consortium (NPC) argues that the unwieldy bureaucracy associated with the non-profit regulatory framework in South Africa creates practical challenges for cash-strapped organisations seeking to become more formal in line with donor requirements.

NGO CEO Circle Launched

In a joint venture between SANGONeT and Project Literacy, Friday 24 Feb 2006 witnessed the launch of the Gauteng based CEO Circle.

The aim of the CEO Circle is to create a platform for discussion within the leadership of the NGO sector encouraging networking, collaboration and peer support. An important objective of the forum is to create a safe space for decision makers to discuss common institutional and strategic development issues, creating the opportunity to highlight problems and share solutions.
