South African Warned Over NHI Policy

Doctors' organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have warned that South Africa could face a mass exodus of doctors if the National Health Insurance (NHI) policy is implemented in its present format.

They have also warned about the cost, saying how it will be funded has not been made clear.

They were responding to the Health Department's white paper on the NHI - intended to bridge the gap between private and public healthcare.

NHI to Ensure Equitable Medical Care for All

The purpose of National Health Insurance (NHI) is to ensure affordable and equitable medical care is available to all in South Africa and not just to those who can afford it.
This was the message conveyed to delegates attending the annual conference of the South Africa Medical Association (SAMA) in Johannesburg by Dr Aquina Thulare‚ technical specialist on health economics for the NHI in the Department of Health.

Strategic Involvement of Nonprofits Key to Success of NHI

Nonprofit organisations like Marie Stopes South Africa are following the rollout of the National Health Insurance (NHI) closely to see how best their service delivery operations will fit into the new countrywide scheme.

The National Health Insurance Green Paper was published in August 2011 and says the NHI is set to be implemented in three phases over a 14-year period.
