There is a looming crisis in the civil society sector in South Africa, and if nothing is done urgently, we might see key organisations in the sector suffer catastrophic consequences over in the next year if not earlier.

It is the non-profit sector (NPO), however, that has the edge in working for the interests of you and me, the ordinary people in the community. So why does business criticise civil society for not operating like a business.

South African NGOs have expressed their support and encouragement for the national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
They have also wished the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and other relevant stakeholders a successful hosting of this historical soccer showpiece, which takes place for the first time on the African continent since inception in 1930.

The British charity, Oxfam International, says it has suspended operations at Mbandaka, a key town in the northwest Democratic Republic of Congo, because of insecurity.
Oxfam’s director in the DR Congo, Roland Van Hauwermeiren, “Because of the insecurity that prevailed at Mbandaka we have suspended our activities until the situation stabilises in the region.”

The relevance of social media for South African NGOs was the focus of the 5th Annual SANGONeT “ICTs for Civil Society” Conference. Held for the first time in two parts - from 15-16 October in Johannesburg and 20-21 October 2009 in Cape Town - the conference attracted more than 250 participants.

The annual SANGONeT “ICTs for Civil Society” Conference is the premier ICT event dedicated to the work of the NGO sector in Southern Africa.
The 2009 event will be held in two parts - from 15-16 October 2009 at the Turbine Hall in Newtown, Johannesburg, and 20-21 October 2009 at the River Club in Observatory, Cape Town.
