Unprotected Sex Exposes Men to HIV Infection

A study has found that men who have sex with men (MSM) have a high prevalence of HIV, with Durban having the most men testing positive for the virus compared to Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Researchers at the Human Sciences Research Council, states that, "In Durban, the prevalence is unusually high among respondents at 48.2 percent, in Cape Town, the overall prevalence was 22.3 percent. Johannesburg was at 26.8 percent."

The study, called the Marang Men's Project, was conducted from 2012 to 2013 in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban among 925 MSM.

MSM Recognised For Fighting Homophobia

Mpumalanga’s Gert Sibande District recognises 24 leaders from the local community of men who have sex with men (MSM) for making a difference in their communities and fighting homophobia.

The Anova Health Institute, in partnership with the Department of Health and national associations of people living with HIV, launched the HIV prevention Boithato Project where MSM are provided with condoms, water-based lubricant and MSM-friendly HIV testing spaces.

The Other Side of the Female Condom

Female condoms are not just for the ladies as some gay men in KaMsogwaba Township outside Nelspruit have found, but nearby clinic nurses are still not sold on the idea.

“We get asked why we are using female condoms if we are men.”

While not originally designed for use in anal sex, female condoms can be used by men who have sex with men (MSM) during sex in lieu of traditional male condoms.

Health4Men Launched for MSM

MEN who have sex with men (MSM) can now get specialised sexual health services at Soweto’s Zola Clinic, after the launch of the Health4Men service by the Anova Health Institute.

Anova Health Institute spokesperson, Riaan Norval, points out that, “This will help men, no matter their status, to get health help because many men die from HIV/Aids hiding their status and not being accepted for who they are.”

MSM Overlooked in HIV/AIDS Programming

The Desmond Tutu HIV Centre says South African men who have sex with men (MSM) are twice as likely to be HIV-positive as heterosexual men, but spending on research, prevention and treatment for this group remains low.

Addressing delegates at a conference on MSM and HIV in Cape Town, Desmond Tutu HIV Centre, deputy director, Linda-Gail Bekker said, “We see HIV incidence rates for MSM continue to increase in all studied countries; we must advocate for more research."
