NGOs Deny Benefiting from Zim Diamonds

Global Witness and Partnership Africa Canada (PAC) have ‘categorically rejected’ charges that they asked for one percent of the revenues generated by the sale of the Marange diamonds.

Global Witness campaigner, Annie Dunnebacke, denied such an offer was made by her organisation or any of the other NGOs, adding that the offer to place the one percent proceeds in a protection fund is ‘outrageous’.

HRW Calls to Halt Zim Diamond Trade

The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) says its researchers have found evidence of forced labour, torture, beatings and harassment by troops in the Marange diamond field in eastern Zimbabwe.

In a press statement, the organisation has called for the country to be suspended from the Kimberley Process - the global body responsible for ending the trade of so-called ‘blood diamonds’ that fund fighting across Africa.
