Africa’s first Tabtor Maths Centre Launched

The Western Cape Department of Education together with Via Afrika have launched Africa's first Tabtor Maths Centre in Durbanville in Cape Town.

The department says maths and technology are important building blocks for any child's development if they want to stand a chance of competing for jobs in the future.

Tabtor is a programme which brings maths and technology together and enables learners to work and be tutored on tablets. Learners receive personalised learning plans and regular detailed feedback on their progress.

SA Fails ‘Dismally’ in Maths, Science

Even though South Africa came second last out of 140 on the World Economic Forum (WEF) rankings in mathematics and science, local education authorities rubbished the rankings saying they were flawed.

However, education experts say the rankings are a close reflection of where education is in South Africa.

Educationalist, Graeme Bloch, says South Africa needs to up its game not only in mathematics and science but in all subjects.

Bloch adds: “The rankings are pretty close, learners need to be pushed and work hard in maths, science and humanities.”

SA Poor in Maths and Science, WEF Report

South Africa is almost dead last among 140 countries in terms of its maths and science education, according to this year's World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Competitiveness report.

Last year's report also put the country last out of 148 countries and the report for 2015/16 painted a dismal picture, with South Africa placed at 138 out of 140 countries.

The only two countries ranked lower were Egypt and Paraguay and in terms of Internet access in schools, South Africa was 119 out of 140.

Are the Ministerial Task Team Recommendations Good Enough?

The recently reported recommendations made by the Ministerial Task Team are indeed a step in the right direction for education in South Africa, however there has to be an appreciation that the challenges are also endemic in the system.  For example, the recommendations do not even begin to scratch the surface when it comes to the question of the high dropout rate before matric.

One is very happy that the report by the Ministerial Task Team agrees with public opinion concerning the quality of matric. But one cannot help but ask, are these recommendations good enough?
