Mobile Phones, a Tool for Pregnant Women

Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA), an initiative that aims to empower women to play their part in the prevention of child and maternal mortality in the country, enables pregnant women to access information about their pregnancies and unborn babies on their mobile phones.

Global director for MAMA, Kirsten Gagnaire, says: “We work to deliver vital health information to new and expectant moms straight into the palms of their hands via their mobile phones.”

358 000 African Women Die Each Year in Childbirth

According to Save the Children, 4.5 million children under the age of five and 265 000 mothers die each year in Africa.

In its report titled ‘The State of Mothers in the World’, the organisation states that most of these deaths are related to pregnancy and childbirth and could be avoided by ensuring basic health care.

The report further found that 48 million African women each year give birth without any professional assistance and even without having received any checkups during pregnancy.
