The Most Challenging Part of Early Learning Development is the Road Ahead

In March 2015, the Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, published a gazette for public comment and input on the national policy on Early Childhood Development (ECD).

The overarching goal of the policy is to ensure that ECD services extend to reach all children from conception to the time they commence with their formal schooling at reception year (Grade R). In addition, the policy also aims to provide a common set of standards that will ensure quality and equitable provision of ECD services for all children in the country.

SAHRC Investigates Deaths of Deaf Children

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has launched an investigation into the living conditions of pupils at the Northwest School for the Deaf following the tragic death of three pupils.

The commission says it has learned with shock of the deaths of the three girls in a fire in their hostel at the school in Leeudoringstad near the Vaal River in the early hours of Monday, 24 August 2015.

In a press statement, SAHRC suspects that the fire warning systems at the school may have been dysfunctional.

Call to Expose Poor Girls to Opportunities

Official policy documents show that more women are now active in the economy as entrepreneurs in South Africa.

A range of healthcare initiatives are targeted at improving women's health in an effort to prevent opportunistic diseases.

And larger numbers of girl school pupils are enrolled in subjects such as mathematics, science and technology, which traditionally have been regarded as the preserve of the boy child.

Literacy Campaign Targets 1.9m People

The Department of Basic Education is looking to get the 1.9 million South Africans who cannot read nor write through the Mass Literacy Campaign, Kha Ri Gude programme.
 
Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says her department is to recruit at least 44 000 people to teach adults basic literacy.
 
The campaign aims to achieve a level of basic literacy equivalent to three years of schooling and reduce the illiteracy rate by 50 percent in accordance with the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals.
