ANC Job Creation Targets Unrealistic – SAIRR

The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) says the African National Congress’ (ANC) job creation targets are unrealistic as many of the sectors earmarked for creating employment have been shedding jobs for years.
The organisation says that ANC secretary-general, Gwede Mantashe, identified ‘mining output and beneficiation’ as a sector in which 140 000 jobs will be created by 2020.

Economic Recovery Not Creating Jobs, Says ILO

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) says a faltering and uneven increase in jobs is holding back economic recovery, and unemployment is likely to continue at near records this year.

IOL notes that weak job creation is particularly devastating for young people, and official figures understate the true number of unemployed as many have given up looking for work.

SA Faces Hard Choices On Labour Law – IMF

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), South Africa’s jobless rate is likely to remain high for a ‘considerable’ period and the economy’s growth rate needs to rise to six percent before there is large-scale job creation.

In its annual report, the IMF says South Africa suffered more from the global financial crisis than many other emerging markets, with its pace of job-shedding among the highest in the Group of 20 (G-20) countries.

OECD Warns SA Against ‘Decent Work’

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has delivered a stark indictment of South Africa's stubbornly high unemployment rate.

The OECD urged the government to roll out more youth-specific measures and warned that the growing focus on providing ‘decent work’ could prove counterproductive.

In its economic survey on the country, the OECD says the true figure, including those too discouraged to seek work, is more than 30 percent.
