HIV Vaccine Trial in SA

A new clinical trial is underway in South Africa on an experimental vaccine that could safely prevent HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

According to a statement from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the HVTN 702 is the largest and most advanced HIV vaccine clinical trial to be undertaken in South Africa, where some seven million people are living with the virus.

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation: Project Coordinator

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation (DTHF) is a registered nonprofit organisation focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa. 

The DTHF seeks to appoint a Project Coordinator, based at the DTHF Mobile Services, Observatory, Cape Town.

This is a full-time, one-year contract position.

HIVSA: Community Health Workers Trainer

HIVSA is a South African nonprofit company that offers comprehensive care and support to those individuals infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, their families and those living in impoverished circumstances.

HIVSA seeks to appoint a Community Health Work (CHW) Trainer with a nursing background to be responsible for coordination and support for the training of Community Health Workers, based in Johannesburg.

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation: Driver

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation (DTHF) is a registered nonprofit organisation focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa. 

The DTHF seeks to appoint a Driver, based in Observatory, Johannesburg.

This full-time one-year fixed-term contract position.

SANAC: Monitoring and Evaluation Provincial Officer - Free State

The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) leads South Africa’s response to the national HIV and AIDS, TB & STIs epidemics. SANAC is building a dynamic team that can facilitate its effective leadership of the national response.

SANAC seeks to appoint a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer, based in the Provincial Aids Council in Free State.

Infants Start HIV Treatment Late

According to a study presented at the 2014 Southern African HIV Clinicians Society conference, three quarters of infants starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) across 11 clinics in Southern Africa had severe HIV disease and 87.2 percent met the 2006 World Health Organisation’s (WHO) definition of severe immunosuppression.
 

Women Sterilised Without Consent

The Lesotho Chapter of Women and Law - Southern Africa is conducting a study to determine the truth behind reports that HIV-positive women are being sterilised without their consent in public hospitals.

Various HIV positive women claim that they have had their wombs removed, or fallopian tubes tied, without the consultation after their babies were delivered by caesarean section.

The Ministry of Health says it is not aware of the situation, and has called on the women to come forward with information.
