The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (WRHI) is one of the largest research Institutes of the University of the Witwatersrand and part of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Established in 1994 as the Reproductive Health Research Unit (RHRU), the Institute was formed through a merger with Enhancing Children’s HIV Outcomes (ECHO). Institute status was awarded by the University of the Witwatersrand in recognition of our outstanding portfolio of research.

WRHI Programme is supporting the South African Government to develop, implement and evaluate a national sex worker plan.

Severe Food Shortages in Sudan

An aid organisation in South Sudan has warned of severe food shortages, with the civil war spreading to rural areas of the country, cutting farmers' access to their agricultural lands.

The aid group CARE told Al Jazeera that if the armed conflict continues, as many as one million civilians could go hungry in the region of Equatoria, adding 20 percent more people to the almost five million already facing starvation.

Nestle, Kellogg’s Sued

Chilean authorities are suing the giant breakfast cereal-makers Nestle and Kellogg’s for putting children's cartoon characters on packets of fattening food in breach of an anti-obesity law, officials said on Tuesday.

The government's National Consumer Service said in a statement it had filed a suit against the two companies plus Masterfoods, distributor of M&M chocolates, under June's “Food Labelling Law”.

It accuses the companies of breaching the law by “using children's characters on packets of various products classed as 'high in’ certain unhealthy ingredients”.

Newborn Given Aids Drug 'by mistake'

A week-old baby is currently on medication to drain the HIV mother-to-child treatment drug Nevirapine given to her mother by nurses.

The young Johannesburg mother, who is HIV-negative, said nurses at Krugersdorp's Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital had erroneously given her Nevirapine to give to her child immediately after she gave birth last Wednesday.

She was instructed to give her child 100mg of the drug daily for six weeks, the child's medical card reads.

HIV Programme for Gay Men Suspended

Tanzania has suspended community-based HIV/Aids prevention programmes for gay men, the health minister said on Monday, in the latest crackdown on the high-risk group.

Ummy Mwalimu, Tanzania's minister for health, said the government had received reports that some local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were promoting and normalising same-sex relationships as part of their HIV programmes.

Gay sex is illegal in Tanzania and punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

According to healthcare funders, medical aid fraud is one of the leading crimes in South Africa. It is estimated at between nine and 19 billion rand a year, money which could have been better spent on providing quality health care for all.
