New Codes to Cripple NPO Sector Funding

Charities have been dealt another blow with the release of the new black economic empowerment (BEE) codes. It has emerged that companies will no longer score meaningful BEE points by giving to the poor.
 
The new codes have cut social development funding scores by 20 points, and businesses which supported nonprofit organisations are now exempted from compliance.
 
Durban’s Ethelbert Child and Youth Centre director, Weekend Ngubane, states that 70 percent of their funding was from corporates, they rely on them as government grants alone is insufficient.

Japanese Govt Donates to Local NGO

The government of Japan, through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme (GAGHSPP), has handed over an engineering workshop worth N$96 625 to a local non-governmental organisation.

The beneficiary of the fully equipped workshop, Komeho Namibia Department Agency (KNDA), received the engineering workshop in the presence of Tomohide Yamada, the first secretary of the Japanese Embassy in South Africa.

Raid on Mandela Charities Halted

The Hawks have launched a financial investigation into the misuse of former president Nelson Mandela's funds, including inspecting the bank account statements of some of his close family members, trustees and employees of his charities.
 
The main purpose was to channel the proceeds of Mandela's artwork into the accounts of companies for Mandela and his children. The amount of the proceeds is approximately R15-million.

Lack of Funding Derails Free Condom Programme

According to a report, reduced donor funding has forced the Namibian government to shrink the supply of free condoms, threatening the country's fight against sexually transmitted diseases.
 
A ministry of health and social services study shows free condom distribution has fallen from 25 million condoms five years ago to 15 million in 2011-2012.
 
The supply of female condoms over the same period dropped from 499 000 to 281 000.
 
One of the key donors, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has in the past years scaled back funding.

NLB Collaborates to Help Stakeholders
