From South Africa With Love Exporting Corporate Social Investment

From 1994 to 2008, the trade of South Africa with the rest of Africa experienced a rapid and major growth, but little is known about the extent of the social responsibilities and investments of large South African companies in host African countries. Human Sciences Research Council’s Diana Sanchez reports on some preliminary research on the social investment approach of five large South African companies operating in Swaziland and other countries in the Southern African Development Community region.

Government to Probe Old Age Homes

The Department of Social Development says it was not aware of some Gauteng old age homes being in danger of closing down due to a lack of funding.

The department says that it has been under scrutiny following a fire at the Pieter Wessels Old Age home in Nigel last year, which left 18 people dead.

The comments come after Democratic Alliance Gauteng Social Development spokesperson, Hendrika Kruger, warned that more than 3 000 older people were without homes in Gauteng and the number would increase this year due to some old age homes closing down.

Funding in South Africa: Where Are We Heading?

Sitting at the Lottery Indaba was an insight - but probably not in the way that Lotto intended. Instead of showing up the flaws in the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) systems, it highlighted that the root problem is amongst ourselves: amongst NGOs who are hankering after a past funding model, instead of looking forward.

FPA Report Slams NLB and NDA

The Funding Practice Alliance (FPA) has criticised the National Lottery Board (NLB) and the National Development Agency (NDA), two statutory bodies tasked with distributing funds to poverty-relief organisations and charities, for failing in their mandates.

In a report titled ‘Meeting their Mandates?’, the Alliance finds that the NDA, established to eradicate poverty by granting funds to CSOs, has been unable to disburse funds adequately, and its funding practices cannot be described as developmental.

NGOs Face Funding Cut Next Year

The Community Chest, a NGO advancing, empowering and caring for vulnerable communities, has called for an emergency meeting with its beneficiaries to warn them of an expected R7 million cut in grants next year.

Community Chest CEO, Amelia Jones, says the organisation provides funding to 487 recipients, with grants ranging from R18 000 to R1 million a year. Jones says they paid R16 million to beneficiaries, adding that they expects this figure to drop to R9 million in the 2011/12 financial year.

National Development Agency / National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund Survey

Four South African NGOs, namely Inyathelo - The South African Institute for Advancement, Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT), Community Development Resource Association (CDRA) and Rural Education Access Programme, have launched a survey into the funding practices of the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) and the National Development Agency (NDA).

The survey is aimed at, amongst other things, documenting NGOs’ experiences with the NDA and NLDTF.

Effects of the Global Economic Crisis: Examining the Impact on HIV and AIDS Funding

The global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic has been unparalleled. Between 2007 and 2008, funding increased from US$11.3 billion to US$ 13.7 billion globally (UNAIDS, Fact Sheet AIDS Funding 2008-09). However, the global economic crisis is having dire consequences for HIV and AIDS funding. These effects are felt particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, which has the highest levels of HIV and AIDS infection in the world, with approximately 25 million people infected.

Shame on Lotto

My name is Robin Opperman, and I am the Director of the Umcebo Trust. We run a non-profit art and craft trust, based in Durban. We applied in the most recent Lotto round of applications, and submitted end of February. We received the standard acknowledgements and within the past two weeks were very excited to receive correspondence from Lotto asking for elaboration on a number of issues related to our application.
