The South African Growth Institute (SAGI) was established to bridge the gap between the private sector and the non-profit sector by providing NGOs with the necessary tools to creatively and effectively access funding from the private sector.

We are living through difficult times. Austerity measures by governments in Western Europe and North America have seen the coffers of local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) depleting. It has been widely discussed as a season of sustainability challenges for most NGOs. Owing to our reliance on foreign funding, austerity has apparently dented our sustainability. I, however, do not readily share into that perspective of sustainability. Perhaps the greatest challenge is defining sustainability itself. Yes, semantics can be the difference between survival of NGOs or their death.

According to Jenny Trinitapoli and Alexander Weinreb’s article titled ‘Good news on AIDS in Africa’, the new HIV infections in Africa have declined by 25 percent since 2001, and AIDS-related deaths have decreased by 32 percent over the past six years.
Trinitapoli and Weinreb state that the heroes are the best-known acronyms in the world of AIDS - PEPFAR, UNAIDS, WHO, the Global Fund and a host of NGOs.
They argue that together, these organisations have waged total war against AIDS in Africa.

The National Lotteries Board (NLB) has urged non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to create jobs with the grants it awards to them.
Speaking at the National Lotteries Board Indaba and Inaugural Awards in Johannesburg, NLB chairperson, Prof. Alfred Nevhutanda, warned the beneficiaries to be transparent and accountable to avoid getting into trouble with the law.

The Department of Social Development says that there are 85 000 registered non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on its database, with 18 000 organisations added annually.
Speaking at the National Lotteries Board Indaba and Inaugural Awards in Johannesburg, the department’s deputy minister, Bongi Maria Ntuli, pointed out that during the Nonprofit Organisation Summit, which was held by the department in 2012, it became clear that all the NGOs – who continue to provide services to the communities, operate under the environment characterised by lack of funds.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, says Cabinet has approved the Lotteries Act Amendment Bill, which is aimed at reforming the lottery system.
Davies pointed out that the Bill is aimed at dealing with challenges such as the strict requirements for non-governmental organisations, poor relationship between the National Lotteries Board and the beneficiaries, and the delay in the distribution of funds, among other things.

The Alliance of Youth NGO (AYONGO), an umbrella body of youth non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in South Africa, says South Africa needs to have events such as the National Lotteries Board (NLB) Indaba and Inaugural Awards, so that NGOs can find solutions to challenges such as the delay in the distribution of grants.
AYONGO chairperson, Kenneth Thlaka, who described the NLB as ‘our local agency’, urged NGOs not only to criticise when necessary and to also contribute to finding long-lasting solutions to the challenges it faces in order for it to work for all South Africans.
