200 Families Evicted to Make Space for Mugabe Park

Armed police evict more than 200 families from a farm in eastern Zimbabwe to create space for a game park proposed by first lady Grace Mugabe.

Farmer, Aspinas Makufa declares that, “They ... ordered us to leave, but the government did not provide us with alternative land,” “We have nowhere to go and all our belongings will be damaged as the rains keep pounding.”

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, a nonprofit organisation which foster a culture of human rights in Zimbabwe, says it dispatched a team of legal practitioners to Mazowe to help stop the ‘illegal evictions’.

SERI-SA to Fight ‘Inhumane’ Evictions

The Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI-SA) is assisting Lesiba Matlaila (71), Sophie Kgomare (71) and Kgomare’s daughter, with their application against their eviction from 236 Wilson Street, Fairlands, were they resided for four decades.

The organisation states that there are numerous personal circumstances, unique to this case, which the court must take into account.

NGO Recalls Lwandle's Brutal, Violent Eviction

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) states that a young man committed suicide and a woman miscarried following the eviction of illegal shack dwellers in Lwandle, Cape Town.

Sheena St Clair Jonker, founder of the Access to Justice Association of Southern Africa argues that these are only a few cases she could consult with, adding that “I am trying to assist you in connecting with the real and the authentic."
