Gender Sensitivity in Disaster Management

It lies at the intersection of two major challenges: disaster, experienced by many of the rural poor as drought, flood and storms; and the continuing issue of gender imbalances in many aspects of society. The report highlights that social factors such as age, ethnicity, mobility, access to information and access to resources contribute to differencing impacts on various social groups, especially women. Effective planning for gender sensitivity in disaster management requires not only sex disaggregation of data but a deeper level of analysis.

Champions of the Earth Award Launched

The Champions of the Earth Award‚ said to be the United Nations’ ‘highest environmental honour’‚ has been launched in Pretoria.

It will‚ a statement from the United Nations Environment Programme and the Department of Environmental Affairs says‚ recognise “outstanding visionaries and leaders in the fields of policy‚ science‚ entrepreneurship‚ and civil society action.”

The award seeks to distinguish men and women whose actions and leadership have made a positive impact on the environment.

SANCCOB: Education Centre Teacher

The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is a leading marine nonprofit organisation with a vision to conserve seabirds and other sea-life, especially threatened species such as the African penguin. As an organisation SANCCOB has experienced exceptional growth over the past five years in its core conservation activities of rehabilitation, oiled wildlife response, specialist veterinary service, research and education.

CROW: Finance and Human Resources Officer

The Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) is currently KwaZulu-Natal’s only registered wildlife rehabilitation centre dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of all indigenous wildlife. From mongoose, genets and monkeys to birds and antelope, CROW represents a second chance at a free, safe and sustainable life for thousands of animals every year.
 
CROW is a registered nonprofit and public benefit organisation. It does not currently receive any government subsidies and is solely reliant on donations from the public.
