Startup Employment Figures Fall

This is according to data from job aggregator Adzuna, which says the number of startup jobs dropped from over 1,000 in late 2016 to just over 750 at the start of 2017.

“While not all startups require numerous employees or advertise for these online, many do, allowing ample inference into the sector as a whole,” said Adzuna South Africa country manager Jesse Green.

Health Workers Reject Deal to Drop 'Night Vigil' Charges

About 130 community health workers charged with participating in a prohibited gathering in July 2014, have rejected an arbitration offer from the state, which would have seen the charges dropped in the Bloemfontein magistrate’s court.
 
Anele Yawa, national chairperson of the HIV lobby group Treatment Action Campaign, says, “We met with the National Prosecuting Authority, which offered to drop the charges if we admit guilt. We drew up a list of conditions that had to be met for us to accept their offer but they rejected it.”
 

Teachers Recommend Youth Empowerment

Teachers attending the upgrading seminar on enterprises in Angola have recommended a major stimulus in regard to entrepreneurial activities, with a view to create more jobs for young people.

According to the final communiqué of the meeting, the teachers highlight the importance of training on entrepreneurial activities as a tool that can guarantee the acquisition of competences, capacities and experiences in generating small and big businesses.

Govt Investing in the Youth - Zuma

Jacob Zuma - at the Presidential Indaba on Youth Jobs and Skills - announced that the youth employment has grown and emphasises the importance of investing in the youth.

Zuma states that youth employment has vastly increased since the adoption of the Youth Employment Accord.

He adds that, "420 000 new jobs have been created… mainly in construction linked to our National Infrastructure Plan, the trade sector, government programmes, business services, transport and communication."

​Only GP, WC, Don’t Rely on Income Grants

The Western Cape and Gauteng are the only two provinces in South Africa where more than two-thirds of households earn salaries as their main sources of income.

In the rest of the country, according to the 2015 General Household Survey, households rely significantly on grants to get by.

According to the report, social grants have an ‘overwhelmingly positive impact’ on poverty reduction, adding that, “They dominate the income profile of many poor households and play a vital role in sustaining lives and livelihoods for households that have no employed members.”

Learning Cape Initiative: Relationship Manager
